Blogmas Day 10 - Making My Own Gingerbread House! Success or Fail?

Hi Guys and welcome to Blogmas Day 10!

If you haven't already gathered from the fact that this is my 3rd baking post already, I love Christmas themed baking. Although, I thought I would set myself a little challenge with this one. I don't really tend to make gingerbread houses, but when I do I usually buy the pieces already made up and just stick them together to decorate. I was walking around The Range, who have some amazing Christmas things this year, and this caught my eye; a Make Your Own Gingerbread House. The set includes 2 silicone baking trays and a recipe/instruction book, and thats it. So, lets find out how I got on...

Well, the baking part turned out as planned. I have made gingerbread a number of times, so I was pretty confident with this. It's the building part that I was worried about!

But, it didn't actually go too badly. The only thing was that because the dough was in moulds, it rose upwards as it couldn't go outwards. This meant that the pieces didn't fit together very easily and I did have a few instances where the whole thing collapsed. However, I was not going to give up on it! I kept picking up the pieces and putting them back together, and eventually I managed to get it to hold.

Now for the fun part! Decorating is my favourite part of any baking that I do. I tried to copy the picture as closely as I could, but I found the icing very difficult to work with. As you can probably see from the pictures, it started to look very messy around the joins and the windows. I think the icing was too runny and I should have added some more icing sugar to thicken it up.

Overall though, I am very happy with how this turned out, considering it was completely made from scratch (and it tastes good too!) I think next time I would probably cut off the excess gingerbread to flatten the surface, which would make it easier to assemble. I would probably also ice the windows when the gingerbread was flat, before assembling, to make it easier.

But I'm going to say that this was a SUCCESS, what do you guys think? I hope you have enjoyed this post, I certainly had a lot of fun creating it. Head over to my social media, which will be linked below as always, so that you never miss a new post. 15 sleeps to go...

Catch you tomorrow for Day 11!
